I Finally Did It... #ShoopShoop

*takes a deep black breath*

Like I legit had a waiting to exhale moment in 2019. *queues up soundtrack because that whole thang slapped* I have seen that movie 50-11 million times, including my watching it on network television with all the commercials last week.

Man, listen. A whole exhale.

I have so many favorite parts of that movie/story/epic series of events in the lives of 30-something black women. However, my favorite (even above Robyn throwing that orange at Troy’s leather in the summertime wearing ass) was Bernie and James. Angela and Wesley. (but at some point we are going to have to talk about how Patricia (janet) came through with the most excellent remix of Bernie and that burnt car tho #ItIsTrash #ThatGolfClub #YouKnowHowMadYouGottaBe? *queues up Tweet* pass me a cigarette Bernie #iDigress)

How many of us have found ourselves in a completely vulnerable, devastatingly silent, and extremely public place dressed impeccably in the shambles of our life? Example: At the bar of a hotel looking at the remains of your broken marriage while a couple is taking wedding photos in the lobby. That was Bernie. If you're me *hypothetically, of course ... in my lyfe jennings voice* you're crashing a conference and you meet someone else who is crashing the conference too, and you go hang out together because the friends you're with are conferencing, and well, you're crashing. Anyway, later that evening Bernie and James would make the night beautiful and then return to their lives, to grieve the dead (her marriage) and dying (his wife). An isolated moment in time with reverberations so strong, they needed to be written, double enveloped, mailed, and well, read.

I’ve waiting as long as I could to contact you. I’ve been thinking about you a lot, Bernie. Every day. All the time. I’m embarrassed to even write that down, but it’s true.

Bernie, I fell in love, in one night. You know what’s even harder for me to understand – is that what I feel for you has never undercut the love I have for my wife. Now, how is that possible?

I still watch her every day. So beautiful. So brave. I just wanna give her everything I’ve got in me – every moment. She’s hanging on, fighting to be here for me, and when she sleeps, I cry over how amazing she is, and how lucky I’ve been to have her in my life.

You’re the only person in this world I ever knew I could tell this to – and even if this never finds you, and we never speak again, you’ve changed my life.

I know it was the 90’s but this man wrote her a whole letter, y'all. He used all his words; he used all his real words. Have you ever felt that with someone? You tell them something you haven’t told your family, parents, spouse, or even closest friend. Sure, there may be something to the we’re never going to see each other again quality of the interaction, but that isn’t why you said it. You actually never planned to say it, but there you are, face to face, exchanging real words with each other. And everything about what is happening makes complete sense.

You know what inspiration is? It’s someone who lets you know life will go on and something beautiful can be waiting somewhere. Somewhere, when you least expect it.

I spent an entire day with a man who was absolutely curious about me, because me. The End. He looked at me, in both mine eyes, absolutely focused on me. He engaged with me in a way that showed me my life was going to continue, and something beautiful was waiting on me somewhere. When something dies, that thing that was everything, you begin to see the eventual death in everything living around you. We believe in the pain before we believe in peace because hurt is a more trustworthy emotion than happiness. Why is that? (hello, hello, hello heartbreak)

But he looked me in my eyes wrought with death and offered me real living words. He did it promising me absolutely nothing. Much like James never leaving his wife under any circumstances, what he offered me that night was basically las vegas, by way of los angeles (I mean, they are close enough, in distance and distraction). Though calculating and crisp with his words, he did not say it that way. He carefully remarked that he had one job, and we fist bumped because he did that job well. Splendid.

It was a good ass night. And you know me so you know that I have collected (and conspired) plenty a random of good ass night in my time with super great people that I literally just met as the night commenced. But everything about me now, about who I am, is a life after death experience *big ups to biggie* There was the time prior to mid-2017, and then there is all of this here. I have not had a good ass night in any of this here. What's worse than not having one, is believing with some certainty that there wouldn't be one ever again. Not because I was undeserving or unworthy, but because that's just what this here is all about. I couldn't see it as being possible. I mean, do you know how hard it is to see mustard seeds, fam? My faith-sight ain't what it used to be *somebody grandma pray for me...i need a fan wavin, control top stockings wearin, wig shakin prayer*. But he, doing his one job exceptionally well, shared the good rev. dr. line brother’s word about believing when we aren’t seeing, huddled over his sermon notes captured in a “smart device” likely done using this thing called “y-phi”... They help you work when you're far away from the office.

So, I went on and got some nerve. I did it. I closed my eyes. And I exhaled.

There is no guarantee that I am ever going to see this man again, I had a wonderfully innocent experience with him, and I’m certain that it changed my life. All imperfect pieces in a puzzle that we made fit, in just one night. We kind of left like Bernie and James, grieving, in a good way. Who we were beginning to pass to make space for who we are becoming... *so’which’one’a’yall gonna send me that book tho, #treysongzvoice*

He inspired me. And in turn, we made the night beautiful, in an old fashioned way.

...because I'm happy, Happy, HAPPY!!!

Oddly enough, men in bow-ties DO make me happy!
I almost flooded the house listening to Pharrell’s song. I have never been so taken by words, by music, by dancing, by genuine happiness than the moment I sat, watching his 24-hour long video. I was defrosting some stuff, and left the water running. I heard a faint dripping and realized too late that the water was still on, whilst clapping along – as instructed.

This sweet young lady asked to see my list of things that make me happy. Because I might have 99 problems, but making me happy should not be one of them! FMB was able to come up with 50 things on her list. I imagine if I thought long enough, I could come up with 50 or so too. But, I am going share with you 10. Why ten? Because this is a blog, and I already write too much, and I feel like I need to comment on them. I have, in my older age, have come to desire that you know about it. Just knowing it is not enough for me anymore.

The Color Purple: The movie and the color. I could quote lines from The Color Purple every single day. If you ever hang around me and Ernie #He’sRude you’ll hear us speak to each other using lines from the movie. Not even in an offensive way. It is what it is, yo.

Shug was right though. It’s probably criminal to God for us to see the beauty in the color purple and do nothing about it. Not notice it. Not revel in it. Not pause what we are doing with our lives right in that moment - and live in it.

I never miss a chance to accessorize my life in purple.

DSW Shoe Sales: Father God in Heaven, Lord You are mighty in battle and the aisles of DSW. Oh how I bless You among the endless racks of shoes. If it had not been for Your grace and mercies inspiring triple point earning days, 80% yellow tags, free bag giveaways and birthday coupons, I do not know where my feet would be. You said in Your word that You would pour out blessings that there would not be room enough to receive, and my closet is a living witness. #IClearlyWentToChurchToday

Where is this happy place?
Sunflowers: One day, I am going to find a wild and free field of sunflowers. Endless sunflowers. Sunflowers all about me. I’ll walk through them in a lavender sundress and turquoise beaded sandals. I’ll compose poetry in my heart and thank the Heavens for the strength of each stalky stem. I’ll write letters of love in a journal to my somebody’s son until the moment, before the minute the sun retires. I will look up in that moment of a minute. I will see the sun conceding to the illumination of the moon. Stars will lead me back home.

I would have spent an entire day, never speaking a word. Yet, I would have said all there was to say.

Books: As FMB commonly says, with pride, “Readers Are Leaders” – and she would be right. So many books have changed my life, changed me, the very essence of what I think I am, and you would never have known. Like this list of books here. There was this one book that this one guy surprised me with. A friend posted an excerpt from it about love on FB one day, and he bought it for me. It was everything I believe love to be – written many moons ago. And because of my inability to reconcile love and that guy, it remains unfinished.

Hugs: A hug to me is a hello. No waving, just hugging. Want my undivided attention? Embrace me, my sweet embraceable you. I am never so overwhelmed with so many lovely emotions and feelings, like when I am trapped in an embrace. I never wish to be free of hugs, especially the ones meant for good-bye. I never want those to end!

Pictures: Akil, Sean, Poli, Smoke, et al, despised my wait, let me take a picture moments in college. And they paused the moment or recreated the memory for my disposable camera’s flash #kodak… I mean, now, they are awaiting the scanning of the millions of pictures I took on Bruin Walk, at the Wooden Center, in the Dining Hall, and post-game at the Rose Bowl so they can have epic #ThrowBackThursday social media posts. Ahh, so many memories! I could tell the story of us in Westwood with pictures alone. Interesting that I have this disposition for writing. Suppose it makes sense. If pictures are worth a 1,000 words a piece, I’m in worse debt than my student loans #TheSallieMaeStruggle

Race Medals: Suffice it to say, that I absolutely do not like running. The process of it sucks. The fact that I have to practice running so on race day I can start and finish without medical attention pisses me off. But. Medals. Make. Me. Incredibly. Happy. #14in2014 is basically that. Me, being happy.

Babies: All babies are beautiful. I know we joke about that. But whether or not you find someone (even a baby) physically appealing, the fact that just months ago, there was not this life in your arms in that very moment, how can you not smile? I studied physiology for the better part of my adult life, yet looking at a baby sends me to a intellectually stumped awe. There is this precious living being in front of me, and my only resort is to smile. How can someone who needs you to do every single thing for them, have so much power to make you smile in a single laugh?

Letters: Ever since I was a little girl, I wrote letters. Mostly because the men in my life wrote me. Namely, my grandfather. He would send us handwritten letters from Texas with all the love he could fit in that tri-folded piece of paper. And sometimes a $2.00 bill. I do not write them often, but anytime someone is on my mind for any out of the ordinary period of time, I write them a letter. Because our words become us. And if you put them in the mail, and the recipient opens them, they have you right there with them. For all time.

Music: Ahh music. Something I could go on and on about. I, being a writer, must admit that I do not have the vocabulary or literary aptitude to describe to you what music is to me. Know that it makes me, incredibly happy. Unless it is one of those songs that reminds me of a particular “you”. Then, not so much. But even there, in the middle of it all #songreferencerightthere, I know that at the very least, my heart is still alive – because it feels something. Because it’s all about the little things. The greatest love, is in the little things. There you first find victory, and happiness.
Boobies Make Everyone Happy, Like Bacon!

What an encouraging activity! To list what makes you happy. It is not the easiest thing to do when there is so much sadness in the world, on the roads and linked to our social media pages. But, I bet if every night before you went to sleep, you thought about one, just one thing that makes you happy, before the week ended, you’d always be adding more than one thing to the list.

Try it. You might like it. It might make you happy too.

Accidental Happiness. (whilst running, of course)

You should totally run that way with me.
I’m a runner.

I’ve also started another post that way. Funny how we can’t get past some things. Well, it’s not funny at all. It is a choice. But that is another (other) post I’ll write.

So, there was this guy (I know…I know…). Well, yea he was a guy, but he was also my friend. Who happened to be a boy that was my friend. You can see where I’m going with this, right?

We loved each other very much. I think even before we said it, there was lots of love happening there. I think said it first, you know “143”. Even though that was probably a bad idea and it perhaps maybe kinda ruined us (too), i’d do it all again #cbr.

Other things I said to him? “Let’s do a race together!” You don’t know me and you know how I feel about running! (ie: the blog) Can you feel it? Can you feel it?! Can you feel it?! I’m serious about these medals and ish! I begged, bribed, pleaded, prayed, whined and worried him about it. I wanted it soooo bad. I wanted him to run with me. To join me in experiencing this new part of me that I didn’t know was so damn important.

And it is. So. Very. Damn. Important.

…him? It was not all that important to him. Or fun. Or interesting. (all conjecture, ask him…clearly, I was not right about us… #NotAShotFired). #MedalMonday was just another day of the week for him. Running just was not for him. He told me that running was my “thing” and that it should be okay for me to do things that I liked, and him to do what he enjoyed. And for those to be different things, not necessarily done with each other. It was perfectly okay for us to not share these things… #TheBeginningOfTheEndFolks

Only that was not okay at all. Not that I knew it then (or expressed it well…hello…me and my feelings? #outoftouch) but running is not a hobby, or something I can (could) do without…not like shoe shopping #debatable, or video games, or fantasy football. Running is like my middle name, or genetic code, or my ethnic heritage. It is the essence of who I am. And, I am a runner. And it broke my spirit to hear him refuse me. And then my heart when he ran with other people. That day. That was the day that I really knew he did not want to run with me.

Now there is this other guy. (“guy”…lol…it’s just funny now). He is a friend. Who happens to be a boy. But we are not going anywhere with that. He is a great guy though…

He is also coming to see me. On my side of the world. Again. I’m on a new side of the world, and he is coming to visit me here too. He, he is going to run with me. Not just one race either. I’m also a spoiled brat given the right circumstances. I told this guy that the race we are going to do does not technically count, because it’s not one of my #14in2014. So he has to do another race with me. He has to do both.

He agreed.

I paused. I thought about my bossy, yet playfully cute banter with said guy. I inquired “why”? Why would he agree to do this with me? I had a boy who was my friend (first place we went), who loved me…him, who actively refused to run with me. First with his words, then with his silence. But now I’m getting a “yes”? Normally, I do not question “yes”. I take the keys to the Avalanche, ask for gas money, and return a day later, on empty. But I needed to know what changed.

There were a few reasons why. He wanted to do a race and was already planning on it in 2014 #fate (I guess the world does conspires to help you #TheAlchemist). He is already active and was a runner (sprinter) in his past, so it would be relatively easy for him to get back into it. And, it sounded like fun. These are all perfectly acceptable reasons to run with me.

The real answer, however, was not his response to me when I asked “why”. It was in his reaction to hearing me go on, and On, and ON about my mutha-fckin-medals! He commented on how much I enjoyed it. He said, “It really makes you happy?”

It does.

So my friends, here are the lessons learned on today:

  1. I’m a runner. Running makes me happy. This means: Be Yourself. Being yourself will make you happy. Who knew?
  2. When you are happy, other people want to be around you. This means, they will do something they once thought was incredibly stupid and not fun at all because it makes you happy. And, happiness is a grave, infectious disease. Get. Sick! (OMG, Who. Knew. This?)
  3. Some direct questions are answered indirectly. My friend CB was right. There are some questions you will never have to ask, mostly because you were already given the answers. You gotta watch for some answers, and listen for others when you aren’t asking questions. (Yea, I had no idea about this one until the homey told me. Like really, where do you learn this stuff?!?!?!!?!?)
He is indeed running with me for all the reasons he said. But he is really doing this with me because he knows it will make me happy.

Wait.

He wants to make me happy? O_o

*mind.officially.blown*
