#Medal(less) Mondays

Remember how I told yall that I was a grown adult, but also very much a child, and should always be supervised? I feel like you don’t remember because things continue to happen to me, and I continue to remind you.

Okay, so this is what happened. We were in a panoramic picture for like ever right? Everything was closed and we couldn’t go anywhere or do anything. Which sucks when it’s your birthday. I mean, you can still get gifts and see people, but like you have to sit outside, and be so many feet away, and wear masks.

But this was the post-panoramic picture era and outside was doing things and I loved it. Going to baseball games with friends, eating all the seafood that was ever made in the history of Uncle’s kitchen, drinking all the things, sleeping in as long as I wanted, and smiling. It was an amazing weekend of smiles celebrating my birthday.

The last event, a Wine Walk, was the best way to end it. Blocked off streets, bottomless wine thanks to being a year older and well, buying a ticket to the event, steaming turkey leg, and oversized grilled oysters. Throw in some good friends you haven’t seen in a while, and it was an amazing day. Absolutely amazing. I mean, day drinking and eating, and getting home while there is still light outside? Life sometimes gives, to us millennials, abundantly.

I arrived home feeling amazing. I navigated the tetris that was the cars in the driveway and on the street because, well, my Uncle. I found a path through the freshly manicured grass, and headed for a seat on the porch to take in the rest of the sunshine. I stopped mid-walk because I heard my Uncle’s voice. He was already on the porch, on the phone with someone. I raised my hand in a happy wave, and took a step.

In milliseconds, my body was shaped like a chalk outline of a person who fell from a few stories up. Still alive, but how would you know for certain? I just laid there wondering how my purse was launched so far from me, because it was literally the only thing in my hand. What’s worse is that Uncle literally worked my fall into his conversation - that hadn’t stopped.

“Uncle. I don’t think I can get up.” I actually thought about not asking for help, as if nobody couldn’t clearly see me laid out in the grass in the front of the yard. Like there was a cloak of invisibility over me or something.

“Man, let me go. This girl is still laid out on the grass.” Laughing. “I know, right!” More laughing. Obviously, whoever he’s speaking to knows me and expects this of me.

Uncle had to bring me a crutch to get up. A single crutch, with which to balance myself, through the grass, up the two steps, into the house. I completely forgot about my purse. He brought it in and put it on the kitchen counter.

yes, my ankle is hella ashy under there
How did a magical weekend end like this? How Sway? I’ve run half marathons, ragnar relays, double running event weekends, and I never ended up like this. I SPENT THE WEEKEND WALKING! I didn’t even have heels on. Sway! You haven’t answered me!

I went to the bathroom, cleaned myself up, and hobbled into some pajamas and into the bed. There was still more sun out, but I didn’t see any of it. Until the next day.

___

7:00am, the next day.

“I’m out.” Uncle on his way to work.

“Uncle!!!!!! I don’t think I can walk!” He bursts through the room door assuming I’m laid out again, but I’m in the bed looking at my swollen ankle. It’s like the size of a grapefruit by this point.

“You would hurt yourself when I have to go to work.” Yes, yes I would. I am known for selecting the most inconvenient times to hurt my own self. Walking is my fault now, I guess. He goes to the kitchen and gets an ice pack. I’m instructed to call him if the swelling doesn’t go down. I situate myself in the bed with the ice pack and try to sleep.

But eventually I have to pee. And like I realized at 7:00am, I can’t walk. And I can’t reach that 1 crutch because, where did I put it? Here’s where things get interesting. I’m clearly NOT going to pee in the bed, BUT IF I did pee in this bed, who would know? I literally do the laundry. I got hella bath and body work candles. And yes, I tell yall all my business like my Uncle does, but this - this - I can absolutely keep this to myself.

So I roll over the side of the bed and fall to the floor. Hard. I didn’t realize how tall the bed is and how not tall I am. The math didn’t math and I should feel some shame, but the only thing I feel is the subwoofer attached to my ankle. I shimmy to the bathroom, on my knees and with might unknown get myself propped up on the toilet. Relief. Now, to get back to my room and get my phone because Uncle gotta leave work and fix this.

My phone. In my purse. In the kitchen. On that high ass counter. I haven’t even pulled my pajama pants up. I am in tears yall. Tears. Mostly because I know what’s next. That shimmy I did to get from the bedroom to the bathroom was short. That forward >> left >> long hallway >> right >> through the living room >> left, that I needed to make happen to get to the kitchen, from the bathroom? I literally laid on my stomach, on the floor, and dragged my ridiculous body through the distance of the house, swiffering the floor with my transgressions. When I got to the kitchen counter, I used a barstool to get from horizontal to vertical, and realized I was at the wrong counter.

me in my "good" sweater
I don’t even know how my Auntie from up the street got to the house, to me, and us to Urgent Care. Uncle leaving it unlocked because I'm me makes the most sense though. Not sure, but it was definitely wide open when she got there. I do remember at one point in our exchange saying to her with an unearned amount of audacity that I would be okay - that I didn’t need any help. She just looked at me, as she should have, because WHAT? Girl, if you don’t put your people-of-WalMart outfit on, get your pocketbook, and hobble your butt into this car?

The homey (C.H.) said it best, Lawd. We’re getting a handler for you. You can’t be trusted with yourself.

So the Mondays have been without medals because sometimes you hurt your ankle so bad it takes 6 months to get back into shoes - not running shoes, but two shoes that match. There’s more to the medal-free mondays, but I thought we should get the jokes out first.

I owed you that.

It Could Have Been Us, But...

I recently had a professional development experience in Oxnard, CA. At a resort on the beach. I am writing this, knowing that I sooooo was not ready to leave. I needed one more day to get...well, professionally developed. Yea…that. I needed more time to do that.

I met a man. A man with a very good and very important name. We were introduced on Sunday at the opening cocktail hour. We were conference spouses by the beginning of Opening Reception. We had a lovely honeymoon getting to know each other professionally and personally.

I miss my conference spouse.

This was supposed to be us...
As we planned our late nights and early mornings of sessions, networking and fun, I found a particular event of interest. A 5k Fun Run for conference attendees! Omg! Omg! Omg! How amazing?!?!? I get to run for fun, at work, newly married!! #SignedHimUpWithoutAsking #NoooooHeWasntReady

I kept bringing it up. He kept casually laughing the subject to a new topic.  But I’m persistent (or selfish…you decide) and when it comes to most things, especially running, I am determined to get what I want. I mean look at him?! He’s handsome, great smile, plays well with others, allows me to make all the important decisions #anotherround #turnup #keepthepartygoing, and did I mention handsome? I haven’t even gotten to the fact that we are in the same profession and he TOTALLY GETS ME! #InLove,Professionally

This could have been us... #butNo
Then he finally told me. Despite the fact he has committed himself to a healthier lifestyle and works out, or the fact that his biceps are so big he literally busted out of his shirt at the Corporate Sponsor’s Expo, that he physically cannot run. See, he has a condition, a condition that makes running actually impossible for him to do. Should he attempt such a feat, it would be at the risk of his very dear life.

I am a terrible conference wife. #ijustcantwithmyselfsometimes

So terrible that I could not get past the fact that I wanted to do this thing that might literally kill him, so badly, that I made us get up after a long night of poker and karaoke to walk the 5k. I mean it's for fun. It’s a workout. It’s on the beach. And they said fun...and we’re totally fun. And I’m not sure I could even run a mile on sand, so there’s that. #icouldnot

Unbeknownst to me, runners and participants doing the full 5k received what at the end? Medals. This fun run was a 3.1 mile medal opportunity. Yea they were small, and totally not blingy like all the others I’ve earned, but hot damn it’s a damn medal!! Dammit!!

I'm glad this WAS us! #minusthehandholding
And I am glad I didn’t get a medal. I didn’t really want one after I attempted to jog on the sand and realized that was NOT about to happen #thesandwassoft #myfeetsank #couldntevenrunthe0.1. Quite frankly, though, I did nothing to deserve it. Sure I showed up sans socks and got super sandy by our finish (not to be confused with “the” finish). But I made someone I just met (and “conference” married) out themselves #badstudentdevelopmenteducator. Tell me something super personal that was no business of mine, so that I would let something go that was no business of theirs. Even with community property separation laws in California #IGetHalf, he keeps his condition. I keep my #14in2014 .

I’m an awful human being sometimes. I let my excitement from time to time take me to places that have the potential to hurt others.

Every time I mentioned the fun run, even though I agreed, and was soooo cool with walking, he always had to reveal who he was – a man. And who he wasn’t – a runner. Has he made his peace with it? Probably. Was mine to reveal? No.  Not even considering our happy hour conference nuptials.

But he is an amazing conference husband. And becoming someone who is going to be an amazing friend. As I called out from the warmth of the bed in the morning, he was quietly getting dressed. And when I emerged from my head scarf sans running shoes, he was fully dressed and ready to go.

Five medals closer to #14in2014 (pick a race, any race) and I still don’t recognize the beauty of this. How there are all these people conspiring to see me be great, even at their expense.

I could be more blessed. Because God promises abundance and overflow, I am certain that I will. But I don’t know how much more I can stand! #areasontobehappyMissFaith

So, this is me saying thank you to my new friend for making me calm down long enough to remember why I even decided to do this. And to thank him, and all of you, for running (in your own special way) your own version of #14in2014 with me.

I won’t finish this without you. Not because I can’t. But because it won’t mean anything if I did it, and you weren’t there to see me finish.

#RUDELIKEHELLA

begins with: Oakland is Hella Rude. Hella.
I’m still bitter that I didn’t get a damn medal. Hella bitter. On the day of the race, when I realized that indeed, Las Vegas was happening to me all over again, I cried. A few real tears. I didn’t cry too long, because my team needed me to get it together to get those group pictures. But trust, tears fell.

And my laptop was turned on.

And this was sent via email.

Cause ain’t nobody got time to wait for USPS for this.

Greetings,

You know, the last time something like this happened to me, I was too tired, too worn out and too sore to plead my case to a race staff member. Oh, when I said “something like this” I meant the last time I ran a race that “ran” out of medals. It seems that everybody and everything was running like hella in Oakland, huh? I actually thought, after Rock n’ Roll Las Vegas #redemption #2013 #neverforget, that this would never happen to me. Like being struck by lightning. It’s pretty damn rare already, but should it happen, it’ll only be once.

#TheDarkConOfLeg2 #WellPlayedOakland
Look, I get it. Planning an event like the Oakland Running Festival for the past five years has been a big freaking deal. Like all of the planning. The late nights and early mornings coordinating stuff so that on one particular day each year, thousands of people could feel individual greatness, even from a relay team.

Just like Sunday. Like #TeamTallsAndSmalls.

And when I say “great”…we were great! Hella Great. From the coordinated uniforms, to the #blackgirlsshakintheirpompoms who followed us to every exchange to record it – we inspired somebody somewhere. I know that because my best friend told me. Who is he? Oh, he’s the guy that was there the last time something like this happened to me. He had to help me make sense of things, so in this letter, you would not have to fill in the words from the over usage of *&^%$##* type characters. Because I got hella - hella characters.

Even in the days of #BlackGirlsRun, it’s not as easy as you think to find three black girls to run a marathon relay with you. Especially one in the City of Oakland. It happens to be pretty gosh-damn difficult. Even for my intellectual aptitude, remarkable vocabulary and enthusiasm for running (for medals and mimosas). People actually told me no. And meant it.

But I have great friends. And among them three volunteered – kinda. They showed up and performed. And Leg 4 even ran in a cotton t-shirt?! Do you know what that meant? How much convincing that took? It was kind of a big freaking deal.

I am so honored that they would do this very important thing with me.

There I go again talking about stuff I haven’t introduced. By “important thing” I mean #14in2014. Some among us got the bright idea to run in 14 medal races in 2014. Get 14 medals at our own pace, in our own time, before year’s end. Today was not just a relay with my friends. It was supposed to be my medal #5.

Oh, did I mention that I had to run Leg 2 in order to earn that medal – medal #5? Oh, my bad, not Leg 2, I meant hell. I had to run into and out of the depths of hell of Oakland to earn medal #5. So what you’re saying to me by not having my medal is that I literally lost parts of my life, my ego, my pride and my beauty (I looked a hot ass mess at the exchange) and I have no medal to show off around the office on Monday. For Medal Monday. You know, the Monday after race weekend where your greatness is applauded by colleagues and strangers? It’s like a holiday. A picture taking holiday.

Here’s the thing, you set the price. You put this together, you decided what it cost, and you put it on your website. I potentially would have paid anything. Anything. And I did. I’ve paid it before, and I will do it again, in like a week. Do you know why? Because I run to be great – hella great – and somehow I’ve horcruxed that greatness into the medal I get at the finish line.

Normally, this is the point in the correspondence where I sugar coat my position, you know? Try to be understanding. Make an earnest, impassioned appeal amidst sharing my discontent. But in the days of memes some-ecards and hashtags, ain’t nobody, and I mean nobody, got time for that. I am at home, trying not to move my legs in more than 35° in any given direction, on a day where there were so many things to be excited about. And I am in the bed absolutely bitter. Hella bitter. I ran, I was great, I have no medal. Now, in the ever eloquent and so fitting words of Riley Freeman – it’s time for you to pay what you owe – My Relay Medal.

I need my medal. It might not be a big deal to you, but it’s pretty damn serious to me.

Regards,

#TeamTallsAndSmalls
Relay Bib #9001, Leg 2

I. Will. Get. My. Medal.... Son.
I was hot as fish grease in Texas on a Friday! I honestly expected a little compassion, or consideration. Like Michelle from my Rock n’ Roll Las Vegas experience. But no, my dear running buddies and friends. This was Oakland. And Oakland is hella rude. Check out the response I got:

I have your medal in my office right now if you are nearby.

That's it?! That's ALL you have to say?!?!?!?! I quoted Riley Damn Freeman! Gas is more than $4 a gallon and you want me to drive to downtown Oakland?!?!?! FOH!

I swear I hate Oakland. #ILovedRunningLikeHellaButIWantMyMedal

I RUN…AND STUFF: Race 6, (no) Medal 5

Yea, you saw those parenthesis right. There was a race. A race that had a medal. Race, with a medal, that I did not get. But just like one monkey don’t stop no show, no one (another) race without a medal won’t stop me from regaling you with my tales from the pavement. The pavement which happened to be in the hood. Tales from the hood(ed) pavement.

And by hood, I mean Oakland. I had friends from Sactown, the Bay Area, and back down coming to do this with me. You know? That League of Extraordinary Black Girls Running, better known as, #TeamTallsAndSmalls!

And today’s (no) medal challenge? Oakland. In the morning. Hella early.

As the first 3 legs of the most amazing relay team got prepared to start and shuttle to starts, we saw something amazing. Black Girls. Black Girls that Run taking a picture. A group picture. Hella Black Girls. That’s when Leg 3 looked over at me, and we agreed. We Run “and stuff”…but them? They Run. Period. #motivation

START: You know, at 7:00am, the sun isn’t really up. I actually didn’t see the start line. But my girl CJC #LegOne #GreenOne #TallOne did! Go Girl!

LEG ONE, 6.2 miles – Miles 1 to 6.2: As I waited for Leg One’s arrival, I got to know (kinda) some folks on their way to hell. I mean, to the Leg 2 part of the course. You know, the part of the course that traverses the depths of hell? Anyway, this chick, one of those #ImSeriousAboutThisBlackGirlRunninIsh gets on the shuttle. She was like, “Fck you Leg 2! I’on care about your inclines, your elevation or your gottdamn mountain! I’on give a damn ‘bout no hill.” And just sat down. On the shuttle. I mean school bus #howdidweeversit3toaseat – taking us to Rockridge BART. I was afraid to talk to her.

Minutes later, a lone runner passes. Passes, in under 30 minutes. As in, he passed 6.2 inclining miles in under 30 minutes. #icant #noseriously, iactuallycant

You want me, to run that? FOH! #iHateOakland
         LEG TWO, 6.6 miles – Miles 6.2 to 12.8

Mile 6.2 to 7: Where is that WTF is this ISH meme that LLW is always posting? I know this was the elevated leg of the race, but damn?! Can we ease a sista into this? #nope

Mile 7 to 8: Can you catch a cab from here? I mean, the freeway is RIGHT THERE #incliningstill

Mile 8 to 9: *reply to CJC’s text* “It hurts.” #MoreInclines

Mile 9 to 10: This. Cannot. Be. My. Real. “I paid money to do this.” Life. #didImentionthatthiswastheelevatedpartofthecourse

Mile 10 to 11: *reply to CJC’s text* “I hate Oakland.”

Mile 11 to 12: I’m not running up another damn incline. That’s it. I’m being hazed. Hazed for damn medals. #STILLGOINGUPYONDER

*passes the Temple at the top of the mountain top* Oh Father God In Heaven we’re going down! Finally! Where is my “Jesus Saves When Sallie Mae Withdraws” playlist?!

Mile 12 to 12.8: I got this. I can make it. I’m almost there. I quit.
Syreeta, thank you. *she runs remaining part of the leg in with me to the exchange…I almost cried #almost*

LEG THREE, 7.0 miles – Miles 12.8 to 19.8: Just leave me here. Yes, right here at this freeway underpass. There is nothing left of me that could be of any use – to anyone. This was a really bad idea. Why did they listen to me? Am I even still in Oakland? I really feel like this is somewhere else. And where, Oh where, Is my damn medal? It’s at the start? O_o #TheHell?! I mean c’mon!

Wait. What’s that? We going to McDonalds? Oh, I got a little time for that. #fries

LEG FOUR, 6.4 miles – Miles 19.8 to 26.2: This whole experience was amazing! I wish I could have been faster, but at least I was here. And the homey is about to beast this last leg. I know that because she’s hungry. And literally nothing comes between her and her next meal. So she’s basically going to invoke her inner African and run these last 6 miles in like 12 minutes.

FINISH: The team that drinks mimosas together, finishes races together. Let’s cross this line. Together.

That was the most amazing part for me – running through the finish together. We had our individually celebrated moments at our starts. Welcomed in to our exchanges, and were pampered by the BEST cheering squad on the East, West, North, or South side of the Bay Area! We waited patiently for our 4th leg to arrive, to make us a whole team again. And each of us jogged our way in with her. #FinishStrong

In that moment it didn’t bother me, like it does right now (and for many days after) that I was #HellaSlowRunningLikeHella in Oakland, or that people were fussy waiting to eat, or looking for me, or ready to leave, or that I might potentially miss the UCLA vs SFA #bigsistervslittlesister battle for a spot in the Sweet Sixteen. In that moment, I was running with people who thought enough of me to be part of something much bigger than I could have possibly imagined #14in2014.

And I was sure to thank each of them.

Over chicken, waffles and bougie mimosas #champagne&sparkingcitrus.

MEDALS MOTIVATE ME: Race 4, Medal 3

"The Legend of Extraordinary Luck"
…so here goes it. Question? What do Mariachi Bands, Banana Republic, Pizza and Green/Camouflage Sperry’s have in common?

Easy! The San Jose 408K Running Experience! Race to the Row 2014! Yes folks, the 408K is in the books! I literally woke up Sunday winning. And it wasn’t just because my very first love, my Daddie was born March 2nd! Happy Birthday Pops! I did though, you know, wake up winning, even in the drizzle of San Jose. When I called him after the race, he said:

Daddie: You ran 5 miles? Hmph. I don’t think an ambulance could help me get that far! #He’sHilarious

I convinced my Bay Breeze FB friend turned running buddy to drive down for the race even though she planned to run it virtually. Talked one of my employee-running-friends to do the race as a precursor to the Tough Mudder, KD a.k.a. Dr. Splits On Trees came to pound the pavement with me after our January trail adventure and my Angelica Rollerskates even showed up for some post-race fun!

Told you. #WINNING

Friday Race “Expo”: ugh. Orange race bib. I should have said I was going to run faster than my actual pace so I could have gotten a different color. That teal over there is everything! I would have even been able to better accessorize that grey. What in the world am I going to do with this?

*smile for the camera! #anotherraceexpocherrypopped*

Saturday, Pre-Race: The devil is a lie. Chance of rain? Welp, that means no chance I am running without braids.

*spends Saturday watching He-Man & the Masters of the Universe, braiding hair*

Sunday, Pre-Race: *this is my excited for #medal3 face* -_-

Start: This is going to be fun. I think. #doingthisforRFII

Mile 1: No rain yet. Sweet. Even though I spent all day yesterday doing my damn hair. Anticipating rain, that isn’t coming. #bestweekendever

Mile 2: I kinda like this route. San Jose got some nice stuff. What neighborhood is this again? #MeLikey

Mile 3: I want a taco. Ooooh! The cherry blossoms. I want to live on this street. And eat tacos.

Mile 4: I know damn well it's not about to rain right now! Dammit. #justsprinkles #notthecupcakes #TillmanMemorialMile

Mile 5 (0.97): Um, how about you finish the race. It’s not necessary to take a picture with EVERY Mariachi Band you see on the Mariachi Mile.

*pause*music*selfie/groupie*run*repeat*

Finish: This one was for you Roc! Okay, now where are the mimosas and tacos?

Post Race: Included hitting KD (aka Dr. Splits on Trees) in the face *kinda* trying to take a picture jumping at the photo station and the best pizza and mini cupcakes a girl could pay for! Yasssssss!!! There was even a chartered bus ride back to my free parking spot on the street near the SAP Center. Did I mention I probably had the best post-race pizza ever?

Angelica: She’s never been here; she might need a minute to check out the menu.

Me: I know what I want. I want pizza. I want the pizza with the most meat on it.

Waiter: Then you might want to try this one.

Me: Okay. But that doesn’t look like enough. I’ll have it, but um, add that fennel sausage to it too.  #noroastedonions

Everything about this race was awesome. Great neighborhood route. No backtracking. Happy runners and walkers. A Mariachi Mile of music and smiles. And of course, Medal #3. I could not of asked for anything more. And I didn’t. But I got it. At the Race “Expo” I stopped by the Athelta table. The nice young lady there gave me a bag, a purple and grey hair tie, “Power of the She” tattoos and a card to redeem a surprise gift card ($5 to $50) on race day at their store in Valley Fair.

I crossed over Santana Row to the Mall to get my goodies at the Athelta store, right? It just so happened to be a $20 gift card to Banana Republic…which turned into the cutest top I am going to wear to some special event soon! Because a $20 gift card, plus 40% off = WINNING! #mymathisgettingbetter

I accidentally stopped by DSW because it was in the way of me getting home, right? Just so happens, there were some Sperry’s I accidentally left there. Which happened to be 70% off. So, I was basically just picking up shoes that were already mine, because, camo everything, is everything to me.

AND…hello? My 3rd Medal! I am sooooo winning!

Yep Mrs. Bradshaw, medals totally motivate me too.
