My Trip To Eritrea... #ByWayOfSanJose

One of these days when yall start to care about my mental health, you’re going to stop posting these videos of children being brutalized in school houses. One of these days. Truth be told though, the brutality doesn’t end there. It just changes from the physical to the mental. Cause we ship them off to college and continue to injure them in all the places we cannot see, in the place they have to see a few times a week #everysemester #everyquarter #yearafteryear. We intellectually drag them every lecture period, play tug-o-war with their degrees, then when they have exerted the last ounce of might in their bones, we let them go…all the while, laughing.

...and let Sallie Mae continue to drag them in indebtedness.

I’m also sick, S.I.C.K. of these physics arguments about student behavior in schools, right? For every black girl that is thrown about the classroom, there’s a black boy that assaults an unsuspecting and totally awesome teacher doing such great work in this underserved neighborhood. Ain’t ish equal about these opposites. But that’s not even why I started to write this.

So here’s what happened. I went to a high school in south San José to observe a program. It’s a program we are thinking about using at the University, so like the good student development educator I aspire to be, I went to see it in action. Spoiler Alert: I didn’t do anything amazing while I was there. I did not change the world. Nor did I see the world change. Like, I wasn’t inspirational, amazing, or ANYTHING of the sort. So, um, don’t keep reading expecting that.

Anyway, where was I? Yea, the program. Well, as the content was being delivered, I noticed an African-American looking young girl. She was the only person who looked like herself in the room. At least until my colleague and I walked in during their lunch break. Like nobody else looked anything almost like her.

And wouldn’t you know, as luck would have it, that I would sit next to her. Gosh, she had such an adorable smile. It almost looked as if the world hadn’t happened to her. But I know better. She was the only one like herself in the room. So if the world hadn’t happened to her yet…it did this day.

Told Ya. Compliment. Obvs.
Her first words to me? I love your hair. It’s like how the women wear it in my culture.

I wished my first thought was How Sweet! but remember, life has happened so I knew better. I remembered back to that time when I was one of my kind. I was always finding a way to explain things that reminded me of my people in a way that would make sense to someone who could not fathom it. And honestly, wouldn’t put the energy in to even try. I realized then that it was in this environment where I learned a few things, #1 – I was an other… and #2 – That meant my job was to teach people about my otherness, and #3 – I wasn’t supposed to feel any kind of way about that #HigherLearning4DatArse.

High School was incredibly cruel that way #CollegeToo. It’s a wonder I didn’t snap back then in all those AP classes.

My reply? Thank you so much for that. *it was obvs a compliment* And what might you culture be, if you don’t mind my asking?

I hoped that my next thought would be this is going to be some awesome conversation where we both share our identities in this really safe space. You know, where we are both loved and appreciated for who we are #Yasssss #Learning #GrowthAndDevelopment #AndConnectingAndIsh. It was then I realized that being an other means you have to continually out yourself. If you don’t answer the questions, you’re not being nice. If you do answer the question, you’re going to have to answer 50 more to explain the answer you gave the first time. And I thought she must be incredibly exhausted already! You literally cain't win. #GetOutOfTheGameAlready

She answered I’m Eritrean.

I wanted her to feel like, OMG, this person is going to totally know where I’m from and all about my people, and we are going to exchange greetings in my native tongue and it is going to be amazing. Because, America. But you know better. I did too. We’re *America* responsible for Donald Trump & Ben Carson…so….

And she was right. I can’t draw the outline of Eritrea like I can the republic of Texas. I don’t know the history of her people like I do the wretched middle passage of mine (well some of those might be hers too, but you know what I mean…). And aside from the Queen’s English, a lil’ Trap, and Spanish under the influence of this, its best we just wave. And that’s totally definitely because, America.

But she wasn’t totally right #ButHellaClose. Because aside from this guy, I actually know a few Eritrean people. Not that one Eritrean friend. But actual friends, who are fantastic, and Eritrean. And I don’t claim to know everything about Eritrean people…but those friends? ’dem my people. I know ‘dem. So I told her ‘bout’em. LOL, there is nothing like that feeling. That ole'southern'auntie feeling, right? Ain't that baby "so-and-so's folks" type feeling. That was totally the look I had on my face. *i'm becoming my mother -_-*

One of my good friends is Eritrean. We actually just reconnected last month at a running even here in San José!

Her eyes lit up. She was so impressed. I knew she wanted to say more. To ask me more. To talk more. In her whole high school life, she ain’t never had a lady come into her classroom, sit next to her, and know her. But we were whispering to each other while the facilitator continued on – and realized we stole all the time we could.

She didn’t feel all of her otherness. Not in the way she did when I initially walked into that room. Sure we looked similar, but she didn’t know a thing about me until we began talking. She didn’t feel a connection to me, until we actually connected. Until I knew something about her – without her having to explain it to me first.

I imagine she needed that. I imagine that if she was on the brink of a classroom breakdown and someone she had a connection to *like the connection we made in that moment* was in the front of the classroom…I imagine she might have been more apt to ask for help. Or confide in that person. Or alert that person to what was going on. Or name what she needed. I imagine she would have trusted that person like me to fix it. Or even trusted that person like me when they said, I got you. Because, they would of had her.

We already know outliers exist. But those aren’t the people making our world a difficult place. It’s all the people who are quick to respond to those videos like Don Lemon #SunnyDruuugggggHimOnNationalTV #HeDefinitelyEarnedit #LikeTheWeeknd #AreYouGuysKiddingMe? #ThatWasAQuote #LetTheDraggingBegin. We don’t know what she did to deserve being dragged about the classroom like a ragdoll. We should wait until we figure out what she did wrong first, because no adult would do that with just because. Because a child can do something in a classroom sitting to deserve that #WhenMySeatedPresenceIsAViolentActOfRebellion.

Later this day I was talking to my colleague who was observing at the high school with me. I shared with her how I connected to that student. I keep being reminded of my purpose. How much it’s needed. And how necessary I am. Listen…this ain’t no I’m the ish, you need me, I’m Queen Bey(ish) type ish…but if somebody doesn’t go into these classrooms and starts being another with these kids drowning in their otherness, *like I once was #drowning #sinkingdeep* nothing will change.

Later that day, I had the opportunity to speak with students about the importance of diversity and inclusion in Higher Education. About the importance of seeing images of people who look like them dutifully integrated into their academic pursuits. How those active and engaged images help to make meaning for their work in the classroom and their trajectory beyond the classroom. An Indian student remarked that having a female Indian faculty member in her Political Science program has positively impacted her performance. That faculty member is her academic advisor now.

You need another to swim. You need another to survive. You need another, because, when you start to drown *we all do at some point* where else will you get a lifeline?

Who better than me?
When better than now?
Why better than just be-freakin-cause.

And why it took me so long to get to this place, I will never know.

But #KnowingBetter #DoingBetterAsIType…

Can I Get A Medic?? #RnRSJHalf

I didn’t even have a good reason for running the San José half. Like seriously. I decided very early on in the year that I wasn’t doing the California Coast Challenge again, because, like, I already own California. Running it a 2nd year would be like showing off. And, let’s face it, I wouldn't show off.

But there is something about a running event happening in your backyard that pulls you in. It’s the worst kind of peer pressure, because literally everyone is running – why aren’t you? Sure you’ve been super busy (read: stressed the complete eFF out at work) and life has kind of been happening to you. A day of rest is probably the one thing that you need.

But nah. Medals.

Last year around this time, I had the bright idea to stay on campus because campus is walking distance from the start line. And, anytime you can walk to the start line, that’s almost like *does advanced calculus, carries the 4* 30 extra minutes of sleep. Sure you didn’t get those extra 30 minutes last year, but this is a new year, right?

Wrong. See, what had happened was, the football game was a night game. And I was totally supposed to go to the game. Because, support. I didn’t actually make it to the game, but somehow I thought if I stayed up all night watching the game, but from the comfort of a two-seater, not as comfortable as a bed…couch, that I would be super well rested in the morning.

I should just not think sometimes.

Start: You know the lovely thing about running. You can legit sign up to do a running event, and run into someone you know! This is awesome… *smile for the camera Jay*

Mile 1: I can’t believe I acted all outside my mind at that Race Expo for this. I’m so sleepy Jesus.

Mile 2: Did I fix my Fantasy Football line up? I’m pretty sure I did. Right? No?? Maybe?!?! FAWK!

Mile 3: Here come the battalion of little children running like they have no worries. Because, they don’t. Like this is the only thing they’re worried about right now. And really, they’re not worried. They’re having fun. #TheDarkConOfGrowingOlder

Mile 4: Is all this running worth the wine I give up? I mean, I still drink it, but not like I would if I didn’t have to run. I don’t think it’s worth it at all. I should figure it out… *starts doing the math*

Mile 5: C’mon! Positive Energy! You can do this. You can also turn at the 10k loop. #JustSayin

Mile 6: I was about to lie to myself and say I feel good. But it’s Sunday. This sucks.

Mile 7: I seriously don’t want to do this anymore. Not like fake serious like I am other times. Like really effing serious! I should have turned around at the 10K loop!

Mile 8: This little old lady won’t let me be great. Like not at all. She’s pacing me like, eff yo run…i got a least 50 years on you and you look like you’re about to die fast walking next to me. #HellaRude #OldPeopleAreRudeAsHell

Mile 9: Lord Jesus be a medical aid tent. Or one of those dudes on a bike. When you said something about a fire being shut up in my bones, did it have to be today, and have to be my knee??

Mile 10: Did I take that dress back to Banana Republic? It’s soooo cute. I totally need the belt or it’s just not gonna work. Wait, didn’t I just go through this yesterday? #5k #Mile3 #ImLosingMyMind

Mile 11: Seriously? Did everyone get a memo with my picture on it like, if you see her, beat her…I’m like EVERYBODY’s Pacer! Yo…I’m not that good son! #WellPlayedRnRSJ

Mile 12: I smell cinnamon rolls and bacon. I probably don’t really smell the bacon. I think my nose just wants to smell it. And because I smell the cinnamon rolls, bacon pairs well with them, so…*sniff*sniff*

Mile 13: HOW CAN I NOT BE FINISHED YET?!!?!?!!?! #ImNotAngry #OkayALittleAngry

Mile 13(0.1): I’m not sure I’m going to be able to make that walk back to campus. Why is the 0.1 literally always the hardest mile? And why is she so damn happy cheering for me???

Finish: Good Grief & Great God it’s over!!!!!!! *internally passes out, but stays conscious enough to get my medal*

So, I’m hobbling now. Because there is no point in trying to look good. My knee and my ankle are like, she’ll never run again! WE. ON. STRIKE! And for the first time, in any running event ever, I checked myself into the Medial Aid tent. I mean, there is no glory if you can’t make it to the restaurant for your mimosa, so, let’s wrap this ankle and knee up in the iciest ice you got homey. Like Antarctica ice.

As I looked at the weary runners and other body parts abdicating their owners, I see a young, adorable, black man (read: one of my students) smiling back at me.

I should have known you’d be here! I almost left!!

I’m glad you didn’t it *not here for the reunion* What’s good on some of that ice tho?

He pulled out a chair for me. Wrapped my knee and congratulated me on a job well done. It didn’t feel like that. It never feels like that. I’m not sure if I am ever going to feel great after a run. I’m looking for something magical, something Narnian almost. I always feel like everyone else can do so much better than me.

Our catching up didn’t last long. Another runner needed medical attention. He disappeared in a flash, gripping that stethoscope about his neck. Face ready for whatever medical dilemma the runner had. Then I became the proud one. In this line of work – adultbirth – we don’t always get to see our babies in action. You know, like Joe going to see Susan at the hospital #DrewWasHellaPissed #JoeWasLikeTakeThatTakeThat. You know, the same way we never get that recognition for all you’ve sacrificed along the way. He’s going to make a fine young doctor one of these days. And if I didn’t nothing more than let him practice on my knee and ankle, it was worth every weary mile.

I’d do it all over again.

The Bruin Reunion #RnRSJ5k

I keep telling myself that I’m going to stop doing all these repeat running events. But there is something to being hella loyal, and well, you know me. Of course I had to make it back for Rock N Roll San Jose! I mean, I live like a handful of miles away. I can walk to the starting line from my friend’s place. So, yea, I’m totally going to do that. Again.

And, I totally do these events like all the time, so basically they are expecting me to be there, right? It’s like, they roll out a special purple carpet for me because this GirlieGurl is definitely going to grace this running event with her presence, right?

*enter the expo*

Well, that’s weird. There are two races, and I only have one race bib number. Surely someone just got things mixed up. Surely. I’ll just go to the Solutions booth and get this worked out.

*waiting in line*

Hi, can I help you?
Yes. I was trying to get my race bib numbers, and there was only one coming up. Can you get me the race bib number for the other event?
I’ll take a look. *goes into the Matrix* Well, actually we only have you registered for one event.
Wheetttt? *surely you must recognize me, there has to be some mistake…did you not see the processional?* Um, there are two races. Why would I just sign up for one?
The person next to me can check into this for you. She can see more stuff that I can.

*waiting for the next person*

Yes. The woman next to you said that I was only registered for one event this weekend.
*looks into the Matrix* Yes, I see you are a tour pass holder. You’re registered for the 5K and you registered for the Half in San Diego and Las Vegas.”
Uh…and San Jose.
I don’t see that here. I see that you have another tour pass registration to use.
Well, I register for these things all the time. I literally pay for other people to run these events without them knowing, so um, why in the world would I not *make sure I’m getting all my medals* register myself?
We can totally get you registered today. If you take this card to the registration booth, they’ll get you registered for the Half.

*they better…or this will be the 10th and final year of this event homey…ask about me in these streets*

Okay, it was actually more dramatic than it seems. Like for real. You know I am a snob about my running. And yes, while everything was taking care of, this was the year of bacon themed race bibs…so that awesome bacon name I came up with is forever lost.

…and you cannot replace that. #PRandBacon #NeverForgetSanDiego #iWasGreat

Okay, so the 5K…

Start: Okay, let’s get this money. I mean medal. I’m hungry.

Mile 1: I’m glad I stretched. Cause that would have hurt if I didn’t get that good stretch in. #iDidntStretchWellOrMuchAtAll #iHurt #ForReal #ItsNotAnApp

Mile 2: Good thing you’re almost done and you’re not running anymore this weekend. Because you didn’t almost show your entire arse in the Expo trying to get registered for a Half Marathon the next day. #YouDid #YouCouldHaveSleptIn #ButYoullBeBackHereRunning #YoureSoSmart

Mile 3: I need to take that dress back to Banana Republic. Or see if they can replace the belt. How did I buy that super cute dress and not get the belt? It came with a belt? It was there when I tried it on? What happened to the belt? #ImDeliriousAtThisPoint

Mile 3(0.1): I’m going to need that beer. I think I just used my last carb.

Finish: Bruh. -_-

I do not know how people stay so committed to their training over the summer. I mean c’mon, the sun is out! Sun dresses have been collecting dust ALL the other seasons long. I mean, it seems almost criminal not to, well…you know, live it up.

So another summer of limited running and training. I mean, sure I got the Wine Run in, but let’s face it…wine.

But that’s not what makes this awesome. I got to see one of my favoritest people I never get to see at these events. A fellow Bruin. It’s so interesting all of the people that intersected into my life during that time. And this guy, class act. Kind. Funny. Caring. Thoughtful. Genuine. Real.

Who happens to have a brother who is a running rockstar! Like, accomplished like none other. You know, the guy that helped me to figure out the winning in running?! Yea, that dude.

Who was also the dude that took our group usie.

Because, no matter how famous you get, that sibling connection trumps all medals. You could be the person to cure cancer *hey, totally do that*…and your sibling could have you, minutes later, doing their laundry…because ‘member when you came in the house past curfew and you scratch the car?

And that medal ain’t saving you from Mama so…. what angle you want this usie? … fluff and fold, right?

A Wedding On The Run #doyouknowntheway

Yea, I know the way. I’m back on my home turf. Rerunning the fourth race of #14in2014, but the first official race of #2015Kin2015 #1253milesIn2015? Why am I here? Doing a repeat race in a repeat challenge series?

I’m here because while it doesn’t count for my one of my three new events, it does count towards my #Make4NewFriends. And he’s an oldie but a newbie to the pavement.

It’s interesting what happens when you do something you love. You start to talk about that thing you love. Because it makes you incredibly happy. When you love something, it consumes you. It becomes all that you are. And, you want other people to love it. The hope is that it will make them as happy as it makes you. But you can never know that for sure. Though inside your broken little heart, you know that they too will find a way to love it. You know that.

Here’s the thing tho. I’m a runner, sure. But I’m not that great of a runner. So, while I’m preaching this running gospel, it’s not like I’ve done any research. You’ve read this blog; plenty of serious runners would read what I’ve done and just…not. Like, not even…

And OldieButNewbie was so worried. What was he worried about? A bunch of silly stuff like: You’re going to take off at the Start Line and run off and leave me… … I’m not going to make it… … I can’t run 5 miles… … It’s going to be too hard…

He threw all that at me, and I knocked it out the park. It was easy to respond to those worries with so much confidence because they were once my worries. And, as figured out they weren’t real, race after race, I became more confident. I mean, I made it. I survived. And there was no way that I was going to leave him. We start together, we finish together. We got this. Our race, His pace.

Yea, that wasn’t good enough. It was like he didn’t believe me. Didn’t believe that he was going to be okay. Sure, you’ve never ran 5 miles, but um, it’s 5 miles. On city streets. In a running event where you can walk the entire time and still make it.

We went on a field trip. Because having successfully survived #14in2014 was not expert experience enough. Nor the fact that, literally a year ago, almost to the date, I did this race – nope, not enough. Just like #ConferenceHubby, it seems that #RunningHubby doesn't listen too good. But the trip served multiple purposes. If you’re not running with confidence, you can at least do it with new feet. So, we talked to a man about a pair of proper running shoes. Well, I didn’t need a pair. OldieButNewbie did tho.

Also, if you didn't catch that, I’z married now! I say I’z married now!!!! I'm registered at all Running (related) Stores, and will gladly accept race registrations... We're (read: I'm) registered at those too... #seewhatwedidthere #happilyeverafterthepainpillsandstretching

Maybe it was a gender thing. Maybe it was the sun shining on the Bay Area. Maybe it was all the awesome running paraphernalia in the store. I can’t be too sure. But he left out of there a new man. You would have thought I was preparing to run my first race and he was encouraging me!

But I love running. And he loves (read: cool with) running too. It’s tough. Sticking to a training plan. Fighting to through the pain. Combating the negative messaging that starts with that 5:00am wake up alarm on race day. Realizing that even though you know that you can start and finish (because you’re stubborn and like challenges), when you have a heart to heart with yourself, you know that there’s a really good chance you should have your medical card with you, just in case… #ifallDownStandingStillSometimes #ItsALostArt #IGotThatCoverageTho #DontLetEmTakeMeToCounty

Race day was awesome. I knew where to go, how to get there, and what to do. He followed along. Not even attempting to step out in front or veto a decision – not once. Blind trust or blind faith? I suppose a little of both. It was a humbling moment. Being on the other side of my confidence. I ran much of #14in2014 in fear. I always found my confidence though, on the other side of the finish (interchange with: fear).

And that’s where his was waiting. Only, he had to make it through the sea of rear ends. Apparently, and this is news to me, if you want to entice a heterosexual male such as OldieButNewbie #RunningHubby to run with you, you don’t need to outline:

1. Meeting awesome people,
2. MEDALS!,
3. Bomb race swag,
4. Beautiful scenic views, or
5. The inadvertent health benefits.

You need only say, would you like to look at the women’s butts for a couple of hours? They’ll be wearing colorful spandex and other tightly fitting running pants/shorts.

Apparently, if you say this, you don’t have to try to figure out a way to massage the costs of the running events, or sweet talk that early morning start time, or mention the whole “training plan” thing. It’ll just kinda happen.

Perv.

So… We killed the #408K. And it was even more amazing the 2nd time around. The weather was nicer. My running clique was with me #SquadLacedUp #ProudRunLeader and we were moments away from the first race medal of the year.

…and mile one was awesome! It went by so quickly, I could have been on pace for a PR. But, this was “Our race, His pace”…so I took my time. Honestly, he’s naturally probably faster than me, but I had already done this. I already got my greatness. It was his turn.

For the most part, it was “our” race, right? Perfectly timed breaks. Brief conversations. Exchanges of encouraging words. Random questions are we there yet?… I mean, having the time of our lives.

As we got closer to the end, I made sure to let OldieButNewbie know, so he could prepare for the finish. You know, hit the nitro #TooFastAndFurious and speed through the finish with me, right? I didn’t want him to hit the button too soon. Our race, His pace. Right? Well, by “our” he was like, yea, we’re both here…and “his pace” he was like oh, you were here running next to me? I didn’t see you, so I left.

Yea, he totally left me. I jogged the last 0.25 miles by myself. Because I wanted to get across the finish line. And, catch up with him. So we could take a picture and have mimosas.

What were the lessons learned on this day?

1.    You can have all the experience in the world. And you’ll still have to get another opinion. #YourFriendsWontBelieveYou #You’llNeedMorePeople

2.     A woman’s butt can be a man’s motivation. #concept *shrugs*

3.    Witnessing someone’s first will never get old. There is so much joy in seeing someone see/do/experience something for the first time. Like a baby’s first step.

4.    If you’re both at the 0.25 miles left mark, just run. He’s definitely going to leave you. He’s not loyal.
