Choose Well.

I gave those words to a friend the other day. He is a living, breathing, inspiring rebellion. He always chooses well. I tend to always find it hard to say. #iwriteiteventuallytho

In the midst of a really real life call for action, organized defiance, and well, rebellion, I remembered my first act of rebellion. The first time I rebelled. Not that, I’m sneaking out of the house type rebellion. Some unplanned, strategic, surprisingly chaotic type –ish. Back when I was in High School.

I went to Menlo Athertion High School. I started the #Bear legacy in god-awful school colors. Bused in from East Palo Alto/East Menlo Park (the “east” means something) by way of SamTrans, I converged upon a population of privilege I could have never conceived. Less than 5 miles away from me, there is a group of people whose experience is so divergent than mine, the book actually starts to make some sense. Google Atherton, CA. Then Google East Palo Alto, CA pre-IKEA/Nordstrom Rack. Let that sink in a spell.

I find it hard to say that everything is alright… And I spent the entire school day with the privileged them. In advanced placement classes, English tutoring, leadership activities and after-school nerdy high school kid stuff. I knew something was wrong, by my standard of right, with my every day experience, but I lived it. Actively participated in it. In my own demise. Never seriously questioned it. Not one single time. I let it happen to me. I allowed it.

And while the people sleep too comfortable to face it, your life's so incomplete and nothing can replace it… Until the final year. When the High School kids become future College students. That’s when the fire was lit inside of me. That’s when things started to change. That’s when I knew, I had to do something. College acceptance letters and scholarship awards start to change people for the worst when they’re not getting them. And they begin to brighten the target around you…when you’re trying to forget you received them. I spent a year in perpetual hiding from the mailman. Not so much from the mail at home, but from having to report the coming. Guidance counselors need to know these things. Apparently. I made it through tentatively. Not knowing what to do. Going along with it, not as easily as before. Unsure of what to do, but realizing day by day that my inactivity was not enough.

I was selected as one of the graduation speakers that fateful Spring in 1998. I get to sit on the stage. Give my remarks. Receive my diploma before my last name group is called. I’m on the program. When your High School CV looked like mine, it’s expected though. And what they planned to hear has expectations too. #NotMet

It was choosing day for me. And everyone watched for my blood to drop on the rock I carried silently. The rock that burdened me so. The one I drug silently through my whole high school life. I diverged. You know, that's a lonely moment. The moment before you decide to insist upon your freedom. I walked up to the podium in chains. The minute I unfolded my speech, looked down at those words, and gazed out into the crowd. I was more certain than anytime in my life before, that on the last page of this speech, I would be free.

While today is still today…choose well… My High School speech was my interpretation of Tupac Shakur’s poem And Tomorrow. Imagine their this must be Chaucer or Eyre or something obscure and English faces, when at the end of the speech, after I had the undivided attention of everyone, waiting impatiently for the next line, they learned of the true author. How I used his lines to talk about our today, and speak our hope for tomorrow; the words of a “gangster rapper” who couldn’t possibly be intellectual or inspiring right? As I finished my speech, I could hear my family (because they are like Legion…they are many…not evil tho), my father cheering #notcheeringbraggingactually with the other Fathers under the football stadium bleachers because the temperature still hadn’t been delegated to Moses that day, and the audible pause, before people did the she’s a kid so we should clap but we didn’t like that speech applause as I went back to my seat. My words delivered, unadulterated by comfort.

I have been nervous in front of crowds delivering professional content that I created. Content for which I know chapter and verse. I sometimes get tongue-tied telling a story about my childhood and I was there. But in that moment, I delivered each line, un-memorized, like an epic cypher, at a legends of hip hop cookout…they are playing spades at the table next to us, and somebody Mama just sent you out for ice. But you didn’t want to leave until you heard the end. I was so calm. So composed. Very eloquent and clear. I sat down smirking. I no longer had the need for self-serving recognition of my person or obligatory clapping. I needed liberation. So I freed myself… I got out of all their boxes. I got out. #IChoseWell #ItWasReallyEasyToSayThatDay

Fret not thyself I say against these laws of man, 'cuz like the Bible says, his blood is on their hands… Things weren’t the same in High School, and I really didn’t much care. My friends from the town gave me mad love for being brave. My parents saw the fruits of the genetically gifted courage. But there were those who never looked at me the same.

I wasn’t anything notable that day. If anything I was exactly what you are. I chose the words of a man, who, if he did nothing else, embraced his humanity. He was a collection of contradictions living harmoniously and unapologetically. He was insistent on being seen. And I insisted on that commencing day of High School that everyone would see me.

Which is exactly what these beautiful humans are doing a Syracuse University. They are a collection of people, a collaborative of beings wanting to be seen. They have a position, priorities, and strategies to help their Administration see them, just as they are. So when it got hard to say, they had to choose. They rebelled. An act of rebellion is nothing more than an urging, a deep plea, a sole shaking desire, to be seen. Why do we so often fear nature? Evolution is rebellion. Resist change long enough, and even that will change you.

And once a fire is lit, nothing will extinguish it. There is no chemical compound that will put that burning out. And if you think a locked door, a security force, or hunger will leave you with ashy remains to be swept under another rug, then you don’t understand this fire. You have no idea what it means to burn. You have no idea what it means to burn.

I say to those who are unwilling to recognize your humanity, your membership into this community of human beings, that what you have done to these, you have done to me. Pops! #ThatSecondLastName Oleksy-Jones

So, I struggle with sexuality. Well, not mine so much. Spoiler...I’m heterosexual. The only struggle with that is finding the person who wants to be heterosexual with me. Actually, I don’t really struggle the other side of that sexuality spectrum anymore.
.
Enter, Pops. MO.m's "hubby" in my professional life. My student affairs paterfamilias. SNJ. That second last name I never told you about. MO.m would be where my introversion, my reflection, my calm comes from. The parts of me people do not often see. Pops is genetically (really, not really) responsible for the GirlieGurl many of you have come to know and love! The laughter, the excitement, the willing to try anything at least one, the hosting dinner parties and events...All of that extroversion is Pops. Totally Pops.

There is no real appropriate place to start when it comes to us. I know, though, that he would begin the story in 2000. UCLA RA Training. Me and my AT&T Nokia phone. Damn shame... I’ve never been smarter than these damn phones.

He was my first hall director. My first supervisor at UCLA. The first UCA alum in my life... And my first openly gay friend. Crazy that I actually know my "first" gay friend, right? Right. #AnotherCherryPopped.

Anyway, UCLA. SNJ. ORL. Delta Terrace. Talk about amazing times. Rewriting my incident reports because I couldn’t control the angry black RA inside of me. Some of the best meals (I cooked for him) in his apartment. Amazing holidays celebrated in the 4th floor of the staff building. Driving his car like it was my own. Being called out in Covel Commons with Shellie. I can still hear him calling us Peacock (my wild and colorful braids) and Du Rag (Shellie always had her hair wrapped up). I wouldn’t trade a second of it.

Well, accept the one second that I would.

People on our staff team didn’t take too fondly to his leadership. I struggled a little with his sexual identity, but not so much that I could not work with him. I couldn’t see how they had an issue with him when I would get ALL the extra work! And I did the extra work without complaint. But, I suppose that made me his favorite because they complained about it to our Area Director.

Our Area Director had a “top secret but not really because I’m an informant” meeting with us. (Damn right I told SNJ about it...hello! He feeds me!). Specific people had their serious issues with commander in Delta Terrace and felt all too comfortable to speak up. I’ve never taken too kindly to this format. If you don’t have the testes or uterus to tell the person, please have several seats. In a confrontation strategy coaching counseling session. For beginners.

Then someone did it. Someone brought up my and his relationship. She’s his favorite... He doesn’t hold her accountable like he does us... She gets to do whatever she wants... *under their breath* Doesn’t she drive his car?

I had a conflict of conscious in that moment. We’re in a room talking about a man who isn’t here to defend himself. They obviously know nothing about our relationship. Which isn’t a relationship. Why are they looking at me? He is a gay man and I’m the daughter of a preacher, and a Christian. And people know that about us. What am I supposed to do?

I thought about it for a while. Then I realized exactly who he was. He was my supervisor, a good (albeit crazy) man, a Cowboy’s Fan #WeDemBoys, a generous person, a gay man...and my friend. And dammit, NOBODY says nothing bad about my friends!!

I began to speak. And with every word, every You're hella moded statement and …as a matter of fact accusatory finger point, everyone else begin to have a crisis of conscience. Mine was gone. Me and the other RAs were never the same after that day. And he and I changed a little too. Only it was me who did the changing. He was the same ole guy. Pops.

Before I made it to Westwood, I would have told you that homosexuality is wrong and I’m not sure I could be friends with someone who lives that life or identifies that way. I could not see how it could be. Not with the way my Bible reads, and how my Daddie preaches. And it’s not even about condemnation; it’s just looking at it from a "what’s right and what’s wrong" perspective, based upon what I believe.

While in Westwood, I made my peace with it all. I was not his favorite. I was just his. To love, to care for, to care about, to teach, to befriend, to develop, to watch Alias & Cowboy games with, and to nag. When I was hungry, he bought groceries and I made us dinner. When I needed to get to the Rose Bowl for the game, he made me take the car to get an oil change days before, then drop him off hours early and bring back lunch – for everyone. When I needed a place to live over the summer, he took me in – no questions asked and no rent required. And when I need someone to look out for me because I was (am) so naive, he anticipates all my needs.

Pops and MO.m took me wine tasting in Napa. You should see them together. How much they care for each other. All of the memories they collected over the years. The shared hopes for our individual futures. There with me, in Napa, drinking wine. There, with me, teaching me about wine. And I wasted every dime they spent on me. We went to some of the best wineries in Napa, because we’re bougie, and sampled California's greatest bottled creations. I had my thizz face on the entire time. Hated it! Even the champagne. I didn’t realize just how much I missed our family time...our together time. Going out to dinner at fancy places I could not afford on financial aid, holidays in the penthouse with that sinful mac & cheese...and good heavens Sweet Tea!

I see now, just how limited my understanding of love was... I love people better because of him. Anyone who has ever received any measure of love from me knows something about Pops. There are days when I am certain, especially at work, that I won’t make it. But Pops is hella strict, and he just won’t allow it. Even those times I fall from grace...as all aspiring earthy angels do. He is always there, waiting for my wings, so that he can catch me, dust me off, and give me enough air to fly again. And his being gay may have something to do with it. Or nah. Point is, it doesn’t matter anymore. It doesn’t make me any less Christian. It doesn’t hinder my walk or relationship with God. My faith is the stronger for it. I believe a little more because of him.

I Really Cannot #Race15Medal14 #ChallengeMedal3

It hurts. Everything about running, half ass stretching, attempting to clear TSA with a bag of medals, and eat all the pasta before 10:00pm hurts. I had to go through TSA twice. Oakland didn’t want me to leave, so I had to go back through. My medals were too blingy and kept making the sensors go off.

This cannot be the life Jesus wanted for me.

I have never been so anxious the night before and morning of a race this year. And well, Happy Hour happened the night before a few of them. I woke up Sunday morning legitimately afraid. Then Batman, Ariel and a gottdamn suc trojan were in the living room ready for picture time. I don’t know where I am right now, but Go Bruins! #BruinsBish #BruinRevolution #WeDemBruins

Well, Race 14 is in the books, now it’s time for Medal 14. And this one is brought to you by Halloween and the City of Angels. The final installment of the #IRunTheCoast is Rock n Roll Los Angeles. San Diego & San Jose are distant memories. 13.1 miles stand between me and The California Takeover.

Start: In & Out costume? Pretty damn creative. I'm hungry. Dammit......I haven’t eaten anything. This can’t be good. Maybe I can sneak a snack from the…oh, my Corral is leaving…Oh, nevermind.

Mile 1: Trust your body. Take it easy… Man, downtown LA is sure looking nice since I lived here. There was a time when I wasn’t a runner that I would have been running down these streets. Funny how life does this… #ComesFullCircle #SameRunDifferentReasons

Mile 2: We’re getting oddly close to that junior college of an alleged institution where they say learning takes place. I don’t know about this.

Mile 3: The gottdamn Coliseum. What a cruel joke…this was obviously the “trick” part of the Halloween season. You mean to tell me I went through ALL OF THIS to run a circle around this? I cannot. I really cannot. Worst part? My medals are literally on the other side of this damn contraption. Dear Life, I hate you.

Mile 4: Um, I don’t feel so good. Perhaps I should stop. I feel like Ezell right now. My neck and my back are killing me! This sports bra (bras) is struggle is real.

Mile 5: Oh, so we just did a circle. Like we’re going back towards the way we came. Isn’t. That. Awesome? I know one thing, if this lady dressed like a referee doesn’t stop sprinting, then walking in front of me, there will be a personal foul. #AintNobodyGotTimeForYou

Mile 6: I hate you all. Why must you be so mean Jesus? I mean, I pray. I help old ladies across streets. I fast (well, I don’t grocery shop, but….you know what I meant…I don’t eat!). I can literally, like LITERALLY see the finish line from here. Fck it. I’m crossing of this gate. I’m getting my medal. I’m tired. I’m hungry. It’s getting hot. I’m over it.

Mile 7: Why am I here? And why is she here? Are those ski poles she’s got? Is she ski-running? Is that a thing? Man, they come up with the craziest stuff. I wonder if you get a special medal for it. Imma look that up when I finish. Maybe EBoogie will do it with me. I’m sure I can convince CJC to do it.

Mile 8: I wonder if I’ll be able to wear my heels tomorrow. They’re so cute. And that dress tho? The color is everything. OMG, it’s going to make my medals pop! Oh yea! Heck yea! #GetIt #MedalMonday #MaybeIShouldFocusOnRunningRightNow #JustAThought

Mile 9: Is that a bridge? As in an elevated part of this route? As in, I am going to be running upward? Hell to the naw. I’m turning around. This can’t be right. *experiencing real defeat*

Mile 10: There are seriously like 3 more miles. Why do I do this to myself? Man, the downtown LA skyline is nice. Let me take a picture real quick *calf muscles start throbbin* Ugh…fine, no pictures. I didn’t forget about what you said yesterday.

Mile 11: Where is that chick with the baby oil? I mean lotion. I mean, damn…what is the name of that stuff? Vaseline!!! Yes! That’s it! I need some of that. I have no idea where this itch on my arm is coming from, but I just can’t deal right now.

Mile 12: I’m going to eat every damn thing in sight. I don’t care what it is or who’s holding it. I, in this moment, completely understand cannibalism.

Mile 13: *Mali Music, Walking Shoes comes on* Wow. This is exactly why I’m here. Damn.

Mile (13)0.1: I feel faint. Not fake faint. Actual faint. I swear, if you fall down right now, right at this finish, I will never forgive you. I might not actually remember who you are because concussions are totally a thing. Point is, I WILL hang on to the memory of never forgiving you…whoever I remember you to be. See, I am getting lost in my thoughts right now. Why is this tenth of a mile So Long! OMG! Save me!

Finish: I can’t believe it. It’s really finished. I really did it. Like, for real. What in the world am I going to do now? Wait...open your eyes...Your Baby Mama is about to cross the finish line! Yassssss!!!! You go girl!!!

I did not plan it this way. I mean I did, because I registered for these races months and months ago. But to have #14in2014 end this way? It took 2 races, 2 locations, 2 start lines, and 2 finish lines to get my 14th race and my 14th medal. I spent the entire weekend running with friends and loved ones. As I finished my last race of the #14in2014, my dear friend was completing her first half marathon! Which is really what this was all about, right?

I guess. I did not know the purpose other than the medals last Winter as we Facebook chatted our way into a year of running for bling. I spent much of my time en route to race locations reflecting on this very thought; the purpose finally revealed to me by a song on my playlist.

Anyone who really knows me knows that my collection of music is, well, eclectic. It’s really hard to describe and I don’t try to explain the seeming contradictions that make up my running playlist. One of which is Mali Music. A newer edition to the running playlist…as it has evolved over time. As I made it to Mile 13, Walking Shoes came on. And that’s when I figured it out. This whole year was about the time spent in my (walking)running shoes…

I got my running shoes on and I could not have told you where I was going, when I decided to do all of this. I’ve run down many lonely roads, trails, streets, inclining paths and hills, and thank God for the scenery. It was beautiful. And something has been telling me that I need to keep on running…

And as I was running, I was thinking, this dude is literally singing, my actual life, exactly as it is happening, in the very moment. How can that be?

Every word, every word he sang revealed to me new meaning. I haven’t had a clue about what I have been doing these 10 months. I have literally been registering for races, telling friends about them, showing up, and taking Medal Monday pictures. That has been the extent of my investment. I said I was going to do 14 medal races, and it just so happened that on October 26th I completed what I set out to do. And I have been desperately trying to figure out the why. But, it’s not always about knowing why, sometimes it’s all about knowing what, and that's enough to keep you walking every day. #QuestionOneAnswered #ThanksMaliMusic

I have been so anxious this whole year. There were points that I attempted to figure out how I would spin my inevitable defeat. In the completely possible chance that I don’t get that 14th medal and race, what would I say? What would be the title of that blog post? How would I hashtag it? 14 running events was totally possible, but for me, it was just a dream that I ain't seen yet, chasing a dream that I ain't dreamed yet, but I'mma meet it halfway if I keep on walking. And I did. I kept on running. And then walking…when it hurt to run. I never stopped. Not one time. I always wondered why I would not stop. My mind said quit, but my body would not stop moving – no matter the pace. What I’ve been after wasn’t at the finish line. That was just the halfway point. There are still miles ahead of me. And my body is well aware of it. #Epiphany #Mali…SirYouAreGood

There are two keepsakes from this running experience to date. I am certain that more will be revealed to me if I do what Daddie always says and keep on living, right? Right.

First, even though all my times aren’t happy times…I never let it slow my pace. Most of my times are pretty slow, and as I continue to beat that dead stopwatch to the ground, the reality is, I may never beat any of those times I think are socially acceptable among runners. If that’s even a thing. I was too prideful to see that no matter the time, I kept moving. I never stopped. Not once. Not even this time when the finish line tempted me so much. That angry ginger headed lady marveled at my pace.

And second, always waiting for something good to find you, but if it don’t come what are you going to do? I mean really. Patience is virtuous, and there are some things in life that are worth the wait. But everything is not. And this was not. Being a good person is awesome. Being a static person is not. I have been waiting so long for some real happiness. I thought that being patient and steadfast in that position I was always in, that it would find me. It never did.

So, I’m just going to keep on running.

You see, 13.1 isn't actually a number – it's a symbol. It means a lot more than thirteen miles and one-tenth. It's more than 30 songs on an iPod or 52.4 laps around a standard track. For many, it represents the destruction of a fear. For others, it's the greatest liberation they've ever felt. For me, it meant breaking a lot of negative cycles in my life and turning my power toward something progressive.

Trust Your Body #Race14Medal13 #ChallengeMedal2

Remember that time I had this really awesome (not awesome) idea to run races on back to back days. I mean how could I have possibly learned anything from Doing The Double or San Jose earlier this month. I flunked the class that experience taught.

But I showed up every day. On time. In the front row. Taking worthless notes.

This was an awesome running weekend on paper though. Not only did it mark the “end” of #14in2014, it was the conclusion of 2 race series challenges. I Run The Bay  & I Run The Coast. Which have now been effectively dubbed, The California Takeover. #IOwnCalifornia

I’m the most amazing person you know. I was born excellent. Matter of fact, when I was born, my Mommie gave me a high 5. Because dammit I delivered myself in half the time! The fact that you know me shows not only that there is a Divine Being, but that He too wants you to be something special.

I am your example in life. Look upon me with all your wonder. I mean you’ll never actually be me, but aspire. I am physically, mentally, spiritually, emotionally and intellectually unable to commune with you. Yet you love me, because I benevolently choose to exist in this world with you.

Now that we got that cleared up....let the running begin.

Start: Please, please, please don’t be a hero. After this you have to fly to Los Angeles and run again. Take it easy. Slow and steady gets the medal. Wait, is the path blocked by that hill right there? We have to run up that? #disrespectful

Mile 1: Um, okay. So another wilderness run. More kids running like they breathe through their pores. Why didn’t challenge myself to this 20 years ago?
#theymakeitlooksoeasy #theyhavdnolifestrugglesweighingthemdown #ihatechildren *Maleficient Mean Mug*

Mile 2: *older ginger lady and ginger kid approaches on the left* Did you do this race last year? To which I huffed, No....and then she goes.... You remind me of this woman last I saw year running. You've got a great steady pace. I couldn't keep up with her, and I thought you were her...and I said to myself, 'Im gonna beat her! Grrrrr'…

*thinking* Did this lady just growl at me with her kid here? Man, running brings out the worst in people.

Mile 3: *my calf muscles finally get the memo about the weekend* FUM we gotta do this again?! Hell to the naw! Oh you stopping at every water station, and if you even think about stopping to take a picture mid run, you will NEVER wear heels again! *hangs head in shame*

Mile 4: That gottdamn hill again. Oh, and he is pushing a stroller up it. I don’t feel bad about myself. At all.

Mile 5: I’m over this. Like really. I feel like this is dumb and the fact that I’ve convinced other people that its fun is a sign that I’m in the wrong business.

Mile 6: I want some bacon. *ginger lady approaches* She might kill herself in front of her kid trying to keep up with me....and I’m slow.

Mile (6)0.2: That medal better be everything I remembered in March. #ItWasJustADream #QueueUpErro

Finish: I want to go home.

Not gonna lie, I felt a little defeated at the finish. I cannot get over the speed thing. I LOVE doing these kinds of events with friends, but I LOATHE that they always have to wait on me. As fast as I go, I’m still soooo slow.

I crossed the finish line, looking up for the exit to the Golden Gate Fields track. I reached for my medal, took my headphones off and saw them. Each one of my friends waiting on me. With their medals and their smiles...and the photographer. CJC said to her, We're ready to take our group picture now.

It’s hard to describe what that gesture meant to me. I was so overwhelmed by pure, genuine, loving emotions that I did what I do best. Avoid them. I turned my inner Leo up to the “hella extra” setting and went in. I couldn’t deal with those feelings. They touched at the heart of something really sensitive, something really vulnerable, something terribly difficult for me to accept.

I am a runner. I have the shoes, the bib, the tech tee and the nearly over-drafted bank account to prove it. But I don’t always feel like one. I don’t feel like I look like one, whatever that means, or that I can be counted into the brother/sisterhood of running because I’m not fast. It bothers me so much. It takes the fun out of it.

But not one of them seemed to care. At all. Not even a little bit. They didn’t seem to care about what time I finished. They only cared that I finished. I’ve been telling people all year that it only matters that they start and finish. I don’t care how they do it...all the medals look the same. I need to stop caring so much about how I do it. There are people who are inspired by it. Like this guy. What’s crazy is that my friends, the whole lot of them said the same thing to me on Saturday. I felt so much shame in that moment. When I read his words, I felt really tears began to swell in my eyes. I finally got it.

Jazzsplanations

I have spent an inordinate amount of time and money at SF Jazz! If I ever come up missing and there isn’t a race scheduled that weekend, check the SF Jazz event calendar. I’m probably there, en route there, or rushing to BART to get to the last Caltrain to take that trek home. I hate driving in San Francisco.

I digress.

Earlier this month I spent time with three lovely people at SF Jazz. If you are looking back at the calendar to see who was performing, you won’t find it. It was a Member’s Only event. Yeah, remember my Jazz Mama? She was playing there and I had to get a membership so I could buy a ticket. You know that happened.

So now, I am benefiting from all the privileges of membership. Like this event, The Artistry of Ensemble: Wine & Jazz. See this winery wanted to give away introduce a new red blend they’ve been working on and well, us. Free wine? Yea, okay. Sit with that for a minute while we get another round.

My lovely friends and I got gussied up after work and made our way to the SF Jazz Center. Ah, that place. Every time I’m in there I feel like I’m in another world. Like I’m a little girl playing dress up, who snuck out to hang with the grownups. I’m always worried that I won’t be dressed appropriately. Then I remember not to apologize for who I am, and enjoy the show.

It was awesome seeing the looks on their faces. Like kids in a candy store, they were awe’d by everything I have come to love about SF Jazz. The ambiance, the setting, the fancy people, the staff interactions, everything! And I knew it. I was so happy. It’s so awesome when you can show and share with your friends nice things.

…until you actually show and share nice things with them. Enter Jazzsplanations.

In order for Jazzsplanations to happen, you need the following:

1.    A ratchet friend that isn’t loyal. This person will say extremely ratchet things, but when the ish hits the ratchet, they will act like they have never seen you; and
2.    A colorful lip’d friend who puts vampires on her lips because apparently red toned things are in; and
3.    A friend that…that’s…that’s…thank God he’s cute; and
4.    …and me. And my kryptonite? My smarter-than-me phone.

Now that you’ve got the friends, you have to give them access to unlimited amounts of wine. That costs them nothing. Like entrance to the venue. It must all be free. #membershiphasitsprivileges

Cute friend will wink at the bartender to ensure that your red wine pours look like your koolaid cups at dinner time. Cute friend will also avoid all forms of order, like lines, and help himself to the refreshments at his leisure. *take a selfie* Vampires for lips friend will twerk-not-twerk on elderly Caucasian men that get too close to her. She also has fabulous hair, so there’s that #heffa #sowhatyoucute. Then there’s ratchet. But before we get to ratchet, we have to talk about what’s going on.

We had a fantastic time. We learned how Luminary created their Red Wine Blend, and the singer jazzsplained music to us. With each development of the wine, she jazzsplained the instrument, the music, the development of sound I never take for granted. It was truly the artistry of ensemble. While we could have done without her singing along with the music, it was an amazing event.

So, in this beautiful room we have a group of musicians playing the soundtrack to our shenanigans. We have the director of the SF Jazz Center, the Winemaker, and a Jazz Singer, entertaining us while we swirl and chug sip our wine. The director tells us, that this event is a first of its kind. There are 2 bars set up with unlimited wine and stemware, a table set up with fancy cheeses and figs, and we are the lucky benefactors of such an event. Everyone smiles and cheers (in a calm calculated tone, cause we fancy and ish).

Enter Ratchet…

Let’s fck this sh*t up… Turn these tables over, break this glass… Turn up!

Wait. Do what?

You should never, ever, eva show and share nice things with your friends. Never. Granted, this friend had no intentions of going through with said plot. Problem was, the delivery of the line was so timely, so well choreographed, so damn believable. He leaned in, so only we four could hear the exchange like he was about to give us the crop report before the stock market opened #TradingPlaces. Before I laughed, I was like, …damn, like really tho? …is he for fake or for serious Lord? *clutched pearls and wine glass*

Just um…next time, go by yourself.
